Why Choose Buprenorphine Treatment?

In 2021, more than 100,000 Americans lost their lives to overdose, a devastation driven by opioid use disorder. There is no known treatment that reduced the risk for overdose death in persons with opioid use disorder apart from medication.

At Plan Your Recovery's Medication First program, we offer people with opioid use disorder maintenance buprenorphine treatment according to the following Medication First principles.

  1. We attempt to get patients appointments with prescribers as quickly as possible, often within a day or two and almost always within a week.
  2. We offer both individual and group therapy but don't require it as a condition for receiving medical treatment.
  3. We allow patients to stay on buprenorphine as long as it is helpful to them.

In fact, Plan Your Recovery's director, Ned Presnall, helped develop the Medication First principles of low-threshold buprenorphine treatment--principles which were adopted by Missouri's Department of Mental Health and by other agencies, departments, and treatment providers around the country dedicated to bringing down the overdose death rate. You can hear Ned explaining the Medication First approach and the science that supports it in this 75 minute Webinar.

Pricing at Medication First

Medication First uses a nurse practitioner model of care. All nurse practitioner appointments for buprenorphine treatment are $150/visit. The cost of medications is separate but often covered by insurance. Sometimes, to get you an appointment more quickly, we will offer you a visit with a physician. Initial physician appointments are $250 and follow-ups are $200.

If you are unable to pay these fees, you may qualify for treatment a one of the clinics in Missouri which provides publicly funded treatment free or on a sliding scale. You can visit the Missouri Institue for Mental Health to find state-funded treatment options.
